<br />
Just the usual distractions, work, kids, X-Wing miniatures game, etc. The Raptor Legion / Chapter are still around and will hopefully get some love soon. I'll try and post some X-Wing and 40k related stuff soon.<br />

Why Wednesday you ask? Well I'm studying for the Cisco Certified Network Professional (Routing and Switching) exams and I'm scheduled to take the switching exam on Wednesday. So lots of studying and very little hobby progress lately.<br />
<br />
The Matte Varnish I settled on after some online research is.... Vallejo Polyurethane Satin Varnish and so far it's been great. I've only brushed it on but will try it through the airbrush later this week.<br />
<br />
With the Riptide set to the side this past week, I was able to turn my attention (when not studying) to some of the Heresy MK III armor that I've had sitting around untouched for months. I've been dreaming of making a Raptors Legion/Chapter ever since I first read about them in Imperial Armour Three: Taros Campaign. They are a successor chapter of the Raven Guard.<br />
<br />
See more about the Raptors Legion/Chapter at the <a href="http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Raptors_(Chapter)#.UizQkcZwrw0">Lexicanum</a><br />
<br />
Also, If anyone has any Forge World Raptors items, Decals, Rhino doors, LR doors etc and you're willing to part with them.... please let me know. I can do $ and or trade depending on what you're after.<br />
<br />
As always, CC is welcome and appreciated and thanks for looking!<br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I'm running into some issues with finding a good matte finish.... I have the new-ish Badger Minitaire "Flat Coat" which in my experience IS NOT FLAT AT ALL!!!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I've had some issues with some paint rubbing off in some places (little nicks etc here and there) while I'm handling the model. I had sprayed it with what I thought was a good coat of Army Painters "Anti-Shine" and then another coat only to find out later (through some online research) that it's not actually meant to provide a protective layer, only to dull down a previous shiny coat. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Lesson learned. Now to nail down a good clear protective coat.... any suggestions are appreciated.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Anyway, I tidied up some of the Ocher (yellow) on the body, arms, legs and weapons. Not done the Ocher yet but close. I'm still not sure about the feet though. I may go with black on the feet and on all the "white" circles you see including the circle in the Empire logo on the shield and chest. The head lens will get a color (still undecided) and an attempt at some OSL (wish me luck).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Off to research some protective coatings. As always, CC is welcome and appreciated. Thanks for looking!</span><br />

I picked up a <a href="http://www.secretweaponminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=37_39&products_id=86">Secret Weapon Miniatures (SWM) Masterclass Scenics: Mud and Water kit</a> about a year ago as well as a collection of SWM's <a href="http://www.secretweaponminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=37">weathering pigments</a>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Until now I had not used any of them. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Pro Tip - If you follow the instructions and you mix some of the realistic water with some of the pigments and or the sand or plaster..... mix just a little bit and set it aside for about 4-5 minutes to allow the pigments/sand/plaster to soak up the realistic water. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I just mixed some up, thought it looked great, started applying it to the base and suddenly (4-5 minutes in) I had a rather solid and hard to do anything with clump of brown (see 4th pic). I then thought..."Gee, I'll just add more realistic water to thin it back up." That sort of worked but by the time I got it thinned out again so I could apply it to the base...I'd used 70% or so of my realistic water and had WAY more brown mud than I could possibly use on this base.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So take your time mixing it up so that you won't wind up wasting a lot like I did.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All that said, I think it's great, works really well and is easy as heck to use even with little or no experience. Like I said, I'd not used any of it before so this was my first go at it and I think the final image in this post shows how well it looks even when done by a novice like myself. Granted there's still more I want to do to the base but I could just leave it as it is.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Note that there's several days between a lot of these pics as it takes about 24 hours for the realistic water to dry. Because you should only apply it in very thin layers, it can take multiple applications (days) to get the depth that you want. I believe if you pour it too thick it will dry and be foggy looking. I wanted a clear look so I've been taking my time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I did mix in 2 or 3 different sizes of model train gravel/ballast. I have some Army Painter stick on bushes/weeds etc as well as some other foliage items that I may use on it. I'm sort of liking the minimalist look that it has currently with just the two tiny weeds/bushes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You'll see in some of the pics where the recessed/lower areas or puddles got darker...that's just where i airbrushed on some of the Army Painter dark tone.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

I forget what combo of paint I used but it was far too yellow for me and my attempt to go over it with Vallejo Ocher didn't work out either. I finally settled on just straight Vallejo model air Ocher which I was turned onto by <a href="http://warhammer40kbloodangels.blogspot.com/">Jawaballs</a> in a recent <a href="http://warhammer40kbloodangels.blogspot.com/2013/08/by-request-post-about-paints-for-my-tau.html">blog/video</a> where he explains the paints he's using on his Tau army.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">You can see my use of the Ocher on the gun, the head and on the shield so far. I'll use it on some more places but It's getting late so it'll have to wait till tomorrow.</span><br />

<div style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JDUZ7i8-7y8/UhS3DmUlsiI/AAAAAAAAA8c/gYnMJw1ZHR4/s1600/2013-08-20+15.34.07.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Not a big update but I managed (over the last several evenings) to get the Riptide pre-shaded. My airbrush has been acting up and frustrating me to no end so I had to stop and clean it several times. I also had to stop and walk away from frustration several times.</div>
<br />
I did find a great use for a boat load of little screwdrivers I had laying around. You know, the promotional kind you often see vendors handing out. Because they have a magnet on the end, I found they worked really well for holding the magnetized Riptide pieces while I painted them.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JDUZ7i8-7y8/UhS3DmUlsiI/AAAAAAAAA8c/gYnMJw1ZHR4/s1600/2013-08-20+15.34.07.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JDUZ7i8-7y8/UhS3DmUlsiI/AAAAAAAAA8c/gYnMJw1ZHR4/s320/2013-08-20+15.34.07.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Going back with the white to clean up some of my thick black lines and over spray.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Handy screwdrivers with magnets on their ends. Good for holding my magnetized pieces.</div>

I still had/have some magnetization to do.<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Just a quick update as I'm about to fall asleep. It was a busy day (non hobby related) but I managed to get some of the smaller weapon systems magnetized so they fit nicely on the arms and on the jump pack engine nacells. I'm hoping to finish things up so that I can at least base coat and pre-shade it tomorrow...assuming the weather permits.</span><br />

I think it looks pretty damn cool but I would have to mod the sword a bit to make it look more Tau and less GK.<br />

I settled on a base design that I've blocked out with cork. In my mind I see it as a forest setting and having a small creek (water) flowing between the Riptides legs...rocks, moss, shrubberies etc.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vMzDFxj46Gg/Ugu38HikTfI/AAAAAAAAA5M/62azbpuPpQQ/s1600/2013-08-13+23.25.11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vMzDFxj46Gg/Ugu38HikTfI/AAAAAAAAA5M/62azbpuPpQQ/s320/2013-08-13+23.25.11.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

I'll work on that this evening but I wanted to try and nail down a pose for it so I can also get to working on a base and get the legs pinned and glued.<br />
<br />
This is what I've come up with so far. The drone peg and the blue-tac is just there to help hold him up as experiment with different poses.<br />
<br />

At least if my wife asks about it I'll blame it on the fever.<br />
<br />
So on to the build. I know I want to change its pose so off come all the pegs that define the pose you see on the box cover and in comes my drill. I'm using pieces from a large bull-clip for my pins and I'm using <a href="http://www.avesstudio.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&product_id=28&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=1&vmcchk=1&Itemid=1">Apoxie Sculpt</a> (2 part epoxy clay) to fill various bits so my pins will have something to be drilled and glued into. See the gray blobs in the pics to see where I've used the Apoxie Sculpt.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mu48gYEV0-A/UggH0i7dipI/AAAAAAAAA3A/wjINoYEzKdg/s1600/2013-08-11+13.10.23.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mu48gYEV0-A/UggH0i7dipI/AAAAAAAAA3A/wjINoYEzKdg/s320/2013-08-11+13.10.23.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Filled the feet since I may magnetize it to a base....still undecided. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xPskw6a6fuI/UggIFYfjbqI/AAAAAAAAA3I/rbDDVNNg1ic/s1600/2013-08-10+21.08.33.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xPskw6a6fuI/UggIFYfjbqI/AAAAAAAAA3I/rbDDVNNg1ic/s200/2013-08-10+21.08.33.jpg" width="200" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EKWK4YAnVfE/UggINbkZIBI/AAAAAAAAA3Q/2vdizM7oaME/s1600/2013-08-11+10.46.22.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;"><img border="0" height="150" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EKWK4YAnVfE/UggINbkZIBI/AAAAAAAAA3Q/2vdizM7oaME/s200/2013-08-11+10.46.22.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Filled the waist so I could magnetize it for posing but also for easier storage and transport.</div>

<br />
In an effort to gain some faction with the "Wife Consortium" I decided I would tackle a house related project that has been on the back burner for a while. We've wanted to replace the handles, nobs and hinges on our kitchen cabinets and drawers since we moved in (two years ago).<br />
<br />
The wife however was not impressed with my first selection. Plain Nob, nothing too fancy.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uWAa9iLFw4M/UgULborCiPI/AAAAAAAAA2U/IqwxzDA9kTk/s1600/2013-08-09+11.20.26.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uWAa9iLFw4M/UgULborCiPI/AAAAAAAAA2U/IqwxzDA9kTk/s320/2013-08-09+11.20.26.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
So I set out to "WOW" her with a Shiny option. She felt it was too small compared to the old nobs and worried that our pants would snag on it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--KGeJ37DjdQ/UgULz-NJZ9I/AAAAAAAAA2c/G3dZ19b9Xwo/s1600/2013-08-09+11.21.24.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--KGeJ37DjdQ/UgULz-NJZ9I/AAAAAAAAA2c/G3dZ19b9Xwo/s320/2013-08-09+11.21.24.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I had one option left and hoped it would be an acceptable compromise. MEGA-Nob!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nKkyu4QlC1U/UgUNk_JWu6I/AAAAAAAAA2s/29k-QjA7vEc/s1600/2013-08-09+11.38.08.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nKkyu4QlC1U/UgUNk_JWu6I/AAAAAAAAA2s/29k-QjA7vEc/s320/2013-08-09+11.38.08.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
She liked the look of the Mega-Nob and was very excited about swapping out all of the old Nobs for Mega-Nobz until she saw the price per Nob. Sadly we need 30 new Nobz and the price point per Mega-Nob is just too much.<br />
<br />
Back to the drawing board.intvlan1shuthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758504863804949777noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5154557852066366240.post-33880831648642635112013-08-05T10:15:00.000-07:002013-08-14T10:14:50.219-07:00Vostroyan Army For Sale 70+ ModelsShameless promotion of a listing I just placed over on Barter Town...<br />

<br />
I'd rather it find a good home as I'm just never going to get to it. I'd also rather sell it through Barter Town (via paypal) than through Ebay.<br />
<br />
Notes :<br />
- I want to sell it as a lot (all of it at once).<br />
- I only ship to addresses that are verified through Paypal. <br />
- I'm only shipping within the USA right now.<br />
- PM me through BT if you have any questions.intvlan1shuthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758504863804949777noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5154557852066366240.post-79026816024494565912013-08-01T10:30:00.000-07:002013-08-14T10:15:16.181-07:00Cathedral Update: Floor tiles, Balcony and Magnets Oh My!<br />
<br />
I picked up a tub of drywall spackle because the two part epoxy putty I have used in the past as a terrain base is just too expensive for terrain of this scale. I put a few layers down over the foam-core, let that dry then positioned the base of the cathedral so I could trace out the outline. I used the outline to lay out some floor tiles (to test) before glueing them down. Once I started to glue down the tiles I decided to break some up and adjust them to reflect the damage caused by whatever created the craters. There's a lot yet to do but you get the idea.<br />

Modeling ADD is the bane of my hobby life. <br />
<br />
I started this Cathedral terrain piece almost a year ago with the intention of it being used as a center blocker. You'll see its scale next to a Stompa and a Stormraven that I placed in a few of the pics.<br />
<br />
It didn't take long for my imagination to run wild and a flood of ideas....blast craters, magnetize all of it, magnetize its base to another larger base so it could be separated into one large flat hill and a smaller hill with a ruined cathedral or the whole cathedral on it etc etc. So like so many of my larger projects, it's just dragged on over the past year getting a little attention here and there.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
These 5 pics are from October 2012. That's a full 4x6 sheet of masonite so it's perhaps a bit big for a center blocker but I like where it's headed. I've done quite a bit to it over the last month so I'll post updated pics shortly. </div>

<br />
This base color makes it look a bit too "fleshy" for my taste but I have to remind myself that it's just a base color and that a brighter color will soon follow and the eventual washes etc as well.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LOtGDChGxnA/UdwwyZgMLoI/AAAAAAAAAyM/bWEePBUqEXE/s1600/2013-07-02+13.08.24.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LOtGDChGxnA/UdwwyZgMLoI/AAAAAAAAAyM/bWEePBUqEXE/s320/2013-07-02+13.08.24.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

Here's some WIP pics of my work on the first tile. Soooo many rivets and such to pre-shade. I think it took me about 2.5 to 3 hours just to clean, prime and pre-shade this one tile. I can't imagine going to all this trouble for 16 tiles or *shudder* 32 tiles etc.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Cleaned and starting to prime it with Badger Air-brush Minitaire Snow White<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cb8Nrw7kD0I/Uc-cwm0WHNI/AAAAAAAAAxU/1f15DZ0YKso/s1600/2013-06-19+20.43.42.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cb8Nrw7kD0I/Uc-cwm0WHNI/AAAAAAAAAxU/1f15DZ0YKso/s320/2013-06-19+20.43.42.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5a1JFrKbYn4/Uc-cwWrRb3I/AAAAAAAAAxQ/d_ZEjGsLOY8/s1600/2013-06-19+21.57.33.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5a1JFrKbYn4/Uc-cwWrRb3I/AAAAAAAAAxQ/d_ZEjGsLOY8/s320/2013-06-19+21.57.33.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
I sort of "reverse" pre-shaded the tile by NOT completely covering some areas with the Snow White.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IS8O3ksIVfg/Uc-cyqL7FHI/AAAAAAAAAxg/rm90g7nFUq0/s1600/2013-06-21+14.17.17.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IS8O3ksIVfg/Uc-cyqL7FHI/AAAAAAAAAxg/rm90g7nFUq0/s320/2013-06-21+14.17.17.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Started with the actual Black pre-shading over the Snow White.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sGjOPP4gLbw/Uc-c-LTBfsI/AAAAAAAAAxo/TosFOEqhHEc/s1600/2013-06-23+10.00.11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sGjOPP4gLbw/Uc-c-LTBfsI/AAAAAAAAAxo/TosFOEqhHEc/s320/2013-06-23+10.00.11.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
OMG! Sooooo much to pre-shade.... Sooooo many rivets etc!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-M-mO4KcKD4U/Uc-c_zZpwgI/AAAAAAAAAxw/mgNiqFVa5WU/s1600/2013-06-23+10.52.27.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-M-mO4KcKD4U/Uc-c_zZpwgI/AAAAAAAAAxw/mgNiqFVa5WU/s320/2013-06-23+10.52.27.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
Shaded in the floor tiles a tad more though I seem to have missed the bottom left in the hall.<br />
<br />
More to come as I've actually tapped off the floor and base coated the walls with a metallic blue shade.intvlan1shuthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14758504863804949777noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5154557852066366240.post-76124465331734256252013-06-29T19:43:00.001-07:002013-06-29T19:43:45.272-07:00Intro Place HolderAt some point I'll post something about me and why I'm starting this blog so this is a place holder post for that.
