Riptide build part 3: More magnets and more posing

Little update on the Riptide build. I settled on a base design that I've blocked out with cork. In my mind I see it as a forest setting and having a small creek (water) flowing between the Riptides legs...rocks, moss, shrubberies etc.

Gluing the cork to the standard flyer base that the Riptide comes with.

Magnetized the head so it'll turn and so I can use both head options or create my own heads at some point.

Shield magnetized to attach to the arms.

Both arms are magnetized at the elbows for posing.

Pinning the legs. A big pin for strength and a smaller one for support and it allows me to stand it up before gluing without it twisting and falling over.

Checking out the pose again this time with more bits on it. Note that it's standing on its own here with no additional outside support.... IE it's not leaning on anything and there's no pins from the feet to the base though I will add those later.

And of course no project can ever be considered complete without having bled on it or during the process.

Riptide build part 2: Posing?

The Apoxie putty has dried so I can safely drill into the various parts for some magnets. I'll work on that this evening but I wanted to try and nail down a pose for it so I can also get to working on a base and get the legs pinned and glued.

This is what I've come up with so far. The drone peg and the blue-tac is just there to help hold him up as experiment with different poses.

Riptide build part 1

Laying in bed with a fever can make you do strange things.... like order a Riptide. At least if my wife asks about it I'll blame it on the fever.

So on to the build. I know I want to change its pose so off come all the pegs that define the pose you see on the box cover and in comes my drill. I'm using pieces from a large bull-clip for my pins and I'm using Apoxie Sculpt (2 part epoxy clay) to fill various bits so my pins will have something to be drilled and glued into. See the gray blobs in the pics to see where I've used the Apoxie Sculpt.

Filled the feet since I may magnetize it to a base....still undecided. 

Filled the waist so I could magnetize it for posing but also for easier storage and transport.

 Filling in parts of the upper torso for a magnet to the waist and one for the head.

 Filling in spots in the arms for magnets.

 And in the legs too.

Test fitting a big pin for one of the legs.

Hopefully I'll get to work on it some more this evening.

New Nobs(z) in the kitchen

Every now and then I get the "look" from my wife that tells me I'm spending too much time on my hobbies and not enough with the family or on chores around the house.

In an effort to gain some faction with the "Wife Consortium" I decided I would tackle a house related project that has been on the back burner for a while. We've wanted to replace the handles, nobs and hinges on our kitchen cabinets and drawers since we moved in (two years ago).

The wife however was not impressed with my first selection. Plain Nob, nothing too fancy.

So I set out to "WOW" her with a Shiny option. She felt it was too small compared to the old nobs and worried that our pants would snag on it.

I had one option left and hoped it would be an acceptable compromise. MEGA-Nob!

She liked the look of the Mega-Nob and was very excited about swapping out all of the old Nobs for Mega-Nobz until she saw the price per Nob. Sadly we need 30 new Nobz and the price point per Mega-Nob is just too much.

Back to the drawing board.

Cathedral Update: Floor tiles, Balcony and Magnets Oh My!

I picked up a tub of drywall spackle because the two part epoxy putty I have used in the past as a terrain base is just too expensive for terrain of this scale. I put a few layers down over the foam-core, let that dry then positioned the base of the cathedral so I could trace out the outline. I used the outline to lay out some floor tiles (to test) before glueing them down. Once I started to glue down the tiles I decided to break some up and adjust them to reflect the damage caused by whatever created the craters. There's a lot yet to do but you get the idea.

Tiles down for a test and then broken up a bit and glued down.

 Some upheaval to the floor from the blasts. I'll have to fill in under them, around them and add some more debris.

 Balcony and some other Cities of Death bits added for detail etc.

Roof piece is magnetized for easier access to the inside.

See magnets installed in the columns. The magnets are a few mm down into the columns while the magnets on the underside of the roof piece stick out a few mm. This helps keep the piece in place without any side to side movement.

Several of the tower floors/levels will be magnetized as well. This will allow for easier access as well as give me options for how tall I want it for any given game.

Cathedral Terrain Detour

So I'm not starting off well with these huge delays between posts... Modeling ADD is the bane of my hobby life.

I started this Cathedral terrain piece almost a year ago with the intention of it being used as a center blocker. You'll see its scale next to a Stompa and a Stormraven that I placed in a few of the pics.

It didn't take long for my imagination to run wild and a flood of ideas....blast craters, magnetize all of it, magnetize its base to another larger base so it could be separated into one large flat hill and a smaller hill with a ruined cathedral or the whole cathedral on it etc etc. So like so many of my larger projects, it's just dragged on over the past year getting a little attention here and there.

These 5 pics are from October 2012. That's a full 4x6 sheet of masonite so it's perhaps a bit big for a center blocker but I like where it's headed. I've done quite a bit to it over the last month so I'll post updated pics shortly.
